Can I do my own electrical work and repairs?
Electrical Regulations ECP50 and ECP51 cover the details of what work is allowed, minimum requirements for safety, the scope of the work and who can do the work. ECP50 and ECP51 have been created for the sole use by the public to give you the electrical guidelines and legal requirements to do your own electrical work. The documents can be quite difficult to understand by the public due to the technical and legal content of of the writing and this can cause problems with the public not being able to understand the limits of the work.
Currently the Electrical Institute is reviewing these documents to create a more user friendly product for the public to follow. These documents will be broken up into a number of manuals relevant to different sections of work so it will be easy for you to choose only the one you need.
The new documents we are creating are currently under construction and an end date for publication is not certain at this point. In the mean time, if you need advice, the Electrical Institute is available (for a fee) to advise you on the requirements for the electrical work you are wanting to do.
